What you want more of

Deeper relationships and belonging

The relationships that carry a life — rebuilt by design, and measured like everything else here.

Does this sound like you?

  • 01

You know five hundred people. How many of them know you?

  • 02

When did you last have a conversation that wasn't a transaction — no agenda, no ask, no next step?

  • 03

If something went genuinely wrong at 2am, how long is the list of people you would actually call?

  • 04

You built the table. When did you stop sitting at it?

(001) What's really going on

Success is quietly isolating. The calendar fills with meetings and empties of friendship; every room you walk into wants something from you, so you stop walking in undefended; and the people closest to you learn to talk to your role instead of to you. The research is blunt about what that costs: weak social ties carry a mortality risk in the same class as smoking, and no supplement, protocol, or physician can prescribe their way around it. Loneliness at this altitude is not a personality problem. It is a structural one — and structure is something that can be rebuilt.

(002) What the evidence says

Every claim links to a primary or authoritative source.

  • Across 148 studies and more than 300,000 people, those with strong social relationships had roughly a 50% greater likelihood of survival — an effect on par with quitting smoking, and larger than the risk from obesity or inactivity.

    PLoS Medicine (Holt-Lunstad meta-analysis)
  • In the Framingham cohort, happiness spread through social networks up to three degrees of separation — a friend's friend's happiness measurably changed your own odds of being happy. Connection is not a soft variable; it propagates.

    BMJ (Christakis & Fowler, 2008)
  • Racquet sports — inherently social exercise — were associated with 47% lower all-cause mortality, the largest effect of any activity studied. Movement done with people outperforms movement done alone.

British Journal of Sports Medicine (Oja et al., 2017)
  • Experiences of awe — vast night skies among them — reduced self-focus and increased prosocial behavior across six studies. The small self is the social self.

Journal of Personality & Social Psychology (Piff et al., 2015)

Santerra is not a medical facility and does not diagnose or treat disease. The week is built to move the inputs your own physician measures.

(003) The mechanisms your week is built on

Each of these sits behind a specific slot on your itinerary, grouped by how strong the evidence is. Where the honest answer is we think so, and we are measuring it, the page says so rather than dressing it up.

StrongMeta-analysis, a replicated body of trials, or a large prospective cohort.

EmergingReal evidence, still thin — a single trial or a small literature.

Nobody at the end of a long life counts their contacts. They count the people who knew them. We rebuild that — and then we measure it.

(004) How Santerra drives it

The method, aimed at this

Three phases. Most programs run only the middle one.

[PHASE 1]

Preparation

Before you arrive, your flourishing assessment takes an honest reading of the connection domain — not how many people you know, but how known you are. You name one relationship you want different: closer, repaired, or simply real again. That name travels with you into the week.

[PHASE 2]

Immersion

Five nights engineered so connection happens by design rather than by luck: assigned seating at one long table, a cohort of six to eight who hear each other's real story, a 1:1 partner from the second night, walks in fours where what you do for a living is off limits as an answer, pickleball scored on the longest rally so your opponent wants your returns, and the letters — written, sealed, and carried home, because the decision to send belongs to a week from now.

[PHASE 3]

Reinforcement

Connection is the one outcome that cannot be sustained alone, so the ninety days are built around other people: a fixed call cadence with your 1:1 partner, the cohort thread, a coaching call at day seven and every other week after — and one standing assignment, a weekly table you host at home. At day 90 we re-measure the connection domain and ask the only question that matters: who knows you now who didn't before the week?

(005) Why we suggest what we suggest

Four of the afternoon choices earn their place on this track in particular. These are what your own day-sheets actually schedule — a nudge, never a default.

(006) And then we measure it

At day 90 we re-run your flourishing assessment with close attention to the Connection domain — alongside the honest, countable things: the partner calls held, the cohort thread alive, the letter sent or the visit made, and the weekly table you now host.

Day ninety is the one that counts — anyone can feel better on the drive home. You leave with your results in a form you can share with your own physician.
