The moments no one announces

The Santerra surprise-and-delight principles for the Signature Experience at Box Canyon — small cohorts in the high desert. The rule is simple: nothing is announced, and nothing is charged for.

Quiet, never loud

Moments of surprise are unannounced and unperformed — a book moved into the shade, a blanket on the chair as the sun drops. The surprise is never loud, and delight is never performative.

All five senses

Scent, sound, touch, taste, and visual beauty — every interaction leaves a sensory imprint, not just a visual one.

Remembered, mirrored, rooted, changed

The most powerful moments make a guest feel one of four things: remembered (we noticed), mirrored (we see who you are), rooted (you belong to this place), changed (something moved).

The notes make the magic

The team quietly logs what each guest mentions — a favorite food, book, song, moment — and those notes become the week's surprises, the evening cards, and the affirmations. Personal, never generic.

At booking

Within 24 hours

[+]A short personal voice message from Jared or Annette — a human voice inside the confirmation.
[+]A postcard-style welcome email, and a real handwritten postcard mailed to their home.
[+]A photograph of the Santerra gardens taken that week — the place, as it looks right now.
[+]Intake questions that quietly seed the week's surprises: favorite song (it returns at Workshop 6), favorite food, a book they love.

T−3 weeks

The box on the doorstep

[+]The welcome box: the signature lavender-and-mint scent, a jar of desert wildflower honey, a handwritten note, and one small thing of the place.
[+]Handwritten note #2 follows — one question, in ink, to bring with them.

T−1 week

The anticipation layer

[+]The what-to-pack email — the season's weather, the week's shape (already built).
[+]A short guided audio for the drive in — the last miles off the highway become the first minutes of the experience.
[+]A digital field note: what's still in color on the property, what the kitchen is planning, and which constellations will be overhead that week (mid-November brings Orion — and, some years, the Leonid meteors).

Arrival

The first ten minutes

[+]Met at arrival with the signature seasonal drink — warm honey-lavender lemonade or spiced cider, zero-proof, in hand before the bags are out of the car.
[+]A warmed herbal towel for the hands in the cool months, a chilled one in the warm.
[+]Bags arrive in the room with a fresh sprig of rosemary from the garden tied on.
[+]A personal walk-through of the property — and then the room reveal: the embossed journal, the illustrated map, the thermos that's theirs, the letter from the two of us.

The room

Personal, down to the pillow

[+]Pillow menu; aromatherapy tailored to their track (the lavender roller for sleep guests); toiletries curated to the guest.
[+]Two robes: a light one for the day, a heavier one for the fire and the cold desert evenings. Slippers in their size — theirs to keep.
[+]A stargazing card and a small red-light lantern by the window.
[+]The minibar re-curated: infused waters, cold-pressed juice, spiced pecans, dates and cacao, fruit leather — nothing that fights the week.

Evenings

The nightly note

[+]Every turndown carries a personalized card drawn from the day's observation notes — plus something from nature that changes nightly: a sprig of rosemary, a late camellia, one bright maple leaf. Guests start looking forward to it by Wednesday.
[+]As the sun drops, blankets appear on porch chairs; fires are lit at turndown.
[+]At the burning ceremony: wool blankets and lavender hand warmers, handed out without a word.

Meals & spa

Signed by human hands

[+]Once during the week, a handwritten note from the chef arrives with a course — the menu quietly marked where it was tailored to them.
[+]After each spa treatment: a small linen pouch of the herbs used, labeled with the date and the season, and a handwritten affirmation at the door.

Trails & grounds

The property plays along

[+]Hidden caches at the trail stops — cold-pressed juice and iced herbal tea in the shade, hot tea and cider at the high overlooks once the sun drops.
[+]Discovery cards along the routes: listen for the canyon wren at the narrows; find the Joshua tree with two crowns; put a hand flat on the granite and feel how long it holds the sun.
[+]Scent stations along the paths — rosemary, creosote, juniper, desert sage — with a card that says only: rub a leaf, breathe, notice.
[+]A writing desk on the Quiet Path, paper and pen waiting. Porch swings and a hammock at the overlooks.
[+]Warm foot soaks waiting after the longer hikes; warm towels after every exertion.

Fireside & rest day

Sabbath play, desert-style

[+]Fireside kits: blanket, hand warmers, evening tea, one reflection card. Story cards for the group that wants them.
[+]An art cart on the rest day: mini watercolor kits, smooth river stones to paint, pressed-flower bookmarks from the farm garden.
[+]A gratitude tree in the gardens — natural-fiber ribbons tied on Saturday for what the week gave.
[+]If the skies cooperate: blankets, hot tea, and the Leonids from the lawn.

Saturday

The heart of the week

[+]Guests harvest and cook the dinner together (already the design) — served on ceramics used only on Saturday, at a long table dressed from the garden.
[+]A dessert made only for this cohort, never repeated.
[+]The candlelit walk: pathways lit by candlelight on this one evening only.
[+]The parting gift: a small-batch infused honey made only for this week — and a group photograph, taken at the table, printed and mailed later.

Departure & after

Remembered past day 90

[+]The mirrored page: a one-page reflection written from the week's observation notes — a strength we watched, a habit they fell into naturally — mailed so it lands just after they're home (rides with the Handwrytten card).
[+]The printed group photo arrives in a later mailing, carrying the signature scent.
[+]A handwritten card every birthday; a card on the anniversary of their stay, with a photograph that calls them back — the quiet bridge to the next cohort and the Circle.
